This is Missing in London. MA Journalism students at Goldsmiths, University of London, have created this website to highlight the many issues surrounding people who go missing long-term.

In the UK, someone is reported missing every 90 seconds and 170,000 people are reported missing every year. Every one of those is someone’s child, parent, loved one, or friend. According to the data published by the National Crime Agency, it was recorded that from 2019 to 2020, 21,489 individuals were reported missing by the Metropolitan Police in London. We want to highlight the huge impact missing people have on the lives of so many and raise awareness of this issue in the hope to help the large number of people that are affected by this issue.

We have dissected the data and dug deep into the trends, creating data visualisations to tell the story of London’s missing people in numbers. We’ve looked for the questions posed by the data and have attempted to answer them.

We ask whether a person’s location, age, and ethnicity are significant factors in whether someone is likely to go missing and, if they do, whether they are likely to be found quickly. We talk to the people who search for London’s missing, including the River Police, who often find bodies that are difficult to identify. We ask whether some unidentified bodies, such as that of the ‘Wembley Point Woman’, might be recorded as missing people, and what more could be done to join the dots. We interview family members who have been searching for missing loved ones, and people who were once recorded as missing themselves. From examining the risk assessments made by the police in the searching process, to the particular vulnerability of some categories of missing people, we explore the social justice issues that missing people sometimes raise.

We hope to inform and raise awareness of all the different issues that there are around people going missing in London. There is so much more to be said but we hope that what we have produced will start a conversation about missing people in the capital.

We are partnered with East London Lines.
